The 5th Annual Saratoga Multihull Open Regatta was completed on July 29-30, 2023. Nine boats competed. Saturday morning on shore, we looked out at a very calm lake. Even so, PRO Terry and Joanne Fraser blew the shore signal right on time at 10:00am, hoping for the wind to pick up. Which it did, to a shifty 4 knots. Race committee of Bob Posson, Edward Kokoski, Charlotte Osborne, John Smith, John Kimball, Lenny Lerner, and EJ Holcomb set an M1 course. The relatively slow race turned into a nail-biter at the finish. Devin Van Zandt edged out Dan Kisel (both on F16 Blades) by just 16 seconds. Third place went to Steve Olsen on his H17SE. Unfortunately, the wind died completely and the sound of thunder sent us to shore. Snacks and libations on the porch were followed by a hearty dinner.
Sunday looked a little better for the wind. However, it devolved into the dreaded "light and variable." Nevertheless, the Skippers persevered and got in three races. James Looby won the second race on his Weta, sailing to the Portsmouth rating with good effect. Devin Van Zandt took second and Steve Olsen came in third. Dan Kisel took the bullet in the third race, followed by James and Devin. The racing was so competitive in the final race that the corrected time difference between first and third place was just 20 seconds. In that final race Dan took third, Steve took second, and James took the bullet to clinch the title!
Also sailing in the difficult conditions were Peter Knapp (F16), Robert MacDonald and Walter Macdonald (F16), Matthew Richwine and Michael Polacco (H18), Dwight E. Williams (H14 Turbo), and Tony Massa (H17spi).
One competitor remarked on Sunday that it was the first time that he had ever flown the spinnaker on every leg of a diamond course!
A big thanks to the MacDonalds for the custom regatta shirts. And as always, thanks to the race committee who did an excellent job and to the Skippers that came together for a fun event.
We got in one race in very light wind.
